There are many stories written, and yet many of these stories lie unprinted.
 
Today, the internet has opened up so many wonderful possibilities for authors, who’s books would otherwise lie unpublished. With the many easy to use programs that abound, like Microsoft Word, it’s much easier to get a book written, then published as an ebook and finally have a book cover made.

Stories Never Told

I remember way back as a child, my mother would tell us a story at bedtime. Each story would be different, capturing our imaginations and leaving us spellbound as we drifted of to sleep.  These stories were never told on paper, lost forever to outsiders but still vivid and alive in our memories.

Once you have your story and created the book as a pdf then you really need a book cover. ‘Don’t judge a book by it’s cover’ but then isn’t that the thing that attracts the eye and inspires you to look further, well I would say so! And then of course its the title and subtitle, and the editorial that helps to make up the readers mind to whether he will or will not purchase the book.

Branding Yourself Online

Following upon on my previous posts about branding and branding your business online it is also important to brand yourself, taking control of your own name, your image and your reputation, and your authority, if you don’t others will do it for you and maybe even not too kindly.

Personal Branding

Personal branding is all about ‘YOU’, who you are and what you stand for, and how you want others to see you, your personal identity. First impressions are still so important. This impression online is created by what you write about, how you write it and how you present yourself visually via a personal blog, website or these days on any of the interactive social media  sites like Facebook. Today online its about transparency, being visible, openness and accountability.

Developing your personal brand, your personal style comes with time but the ‘basic elements’ of who you are remain the same. Developing ‘YOU’ comes from a lot of soul searching and from digging deep in your own ‘Secret Garden’, which is certainly not an over night affair.

Your Personal Brand is all about communication, letting others communicate with you, creating trust and  empathy. Every visual aspect of you, your business, your personal information portrays you. Always be true to you!

AND….. it is all very much tied up in the wrapping, the presentation. It  all counts. Your site communicates, builds empathy, builds relationships. Blogs are very much an asset these days as they increase your visibility ranking higher on search engines.

You may not be the worlds best but demonstrating your authenticity, integrity, honesty goes a long way to creating a positive image online.

How to Backup a Database

As part of our weekly or monthly Security and System Maintenance routine to keep our own websites and/or blogs up and running, we should clean out the overheads and backup the database or databases in our cpanel.

We do the same for our Customers at Web Design Consulting who trust they can relax while the Support & Maintenance Team ensure the Top Performance of their websites and blogs.

How to Clean Overheads in a Database

Due to a number of regular requests coming in, let me show you the quick and easy steps as to How to Clean Overheads in a Database – before you back it up:

1.

Log into your cpanel

2.

Go to “Databases” and here click on “phpMyDatabase”.

3.

On the new window that opens, to the left, you see all your databases in a vertical dropdown, in alphabetical order.

Now simply tick the first of these databases, and, on the table that now opens to the right, you see the “Overheads” to the far right and added up at the bottom of that column. This is the accumulated waste you want to get rid of by optimizing the table. It will clean your blog and make it faster.

What you now do is to tick “Check tables having overhead” (it’s in blue under “sum”) and as a result you will see the corresponding tables getting ticked, so you see exactly where your overheads basically came from.

As a next step you tock the little drop down to the right of “Check tables having overhead” saying “With Selected” and here you select “Optimize Table”.

Now let it do its job! Just wait a moment…

How to Backup a Database

Once it’s done, let’s continue exactly where we are… and I show you How to Backup a Database:

4.

At the top, click on EXPORT.

Don’t touch or change anything here… what you do is…

5.

At the bottom, tick “gzipped” and then on “GO” to the far right.

6.

If you get a popup… select “Save File” and “OK”.

Now this database backup will download to your computer, to a designated folder or your “Downloads”. If you are on Firefox, you will see a note “One active download” to the bottom right of your screen. Call it up and let it do its job.

We tend not to pay too much attention to backups as there’s always sooo much to do… I know!

However, may this little Tutorial help you to rather be safe than sorry.

Discovering Photoshop – Action Scripts

There is so much more to Photoshop than first meets the eye. I am sure that once you start to understand some basic functions you will soon discover the Photoshop action scripts.

The Photoshop Action Scripts take the work out of  creating more complex designs. The action script once activated automatically performs the detailed tasks that it would take to create the final result. There are many of these action scripts to be found online. The example I have chosen is the ‘photobox’ which you can download from here and then follow the installation proceedure.

How to use Photoshop Action Photobox

As you see from the image above this action script creates a very cool effect. Click on the image above to see it full size.

Once you have installed your script open your Photoshop and then the image that you wish to use. Go to WINDOW on the toolbar and select Actions. In the actions menu select ‘photobox’. When the dialogue opens select photobox then click on the arrow button below to play. Just sit and watch as the script takes over and performs the actions to create the box image.You may then need to resize the final product to the desired size you require. Cool eh?

It took me a few tries to get the image centered on the cube, but this comes with a bit of practice. Practice makes perfect they say.
