Clacton Airshow images

First day of the Clacton Airshow 2010  provided a great opportunity to take out the digital camera to shoot some pictures of the days proceedings.  Here are a couple of pictures taken of the Red Arrows aerobatics display on day one of the airshow.

and….

Red Arrows Clacton Airshow 2010

Notice the heavy cloud and murky sea, not really the weather you expect in August.

All pictures were taken with a point and shoot digital camera, a Canon Powershot A560.

Clacton Airshow Day 2

Maybe just a slight improvement on the weather conditions for day 2 of the Clacton Airshow with some bright patches and a little bit of blue sky but not for long. The crowds again have gathered to watch the Red Arrows display at 12.30 today and the fly past.

First Day at the Airshow

By Zo Nicholas

First Day at the Airshow

Althougth the rest of  East Anglia suffered some torrential downpours, down here around the coast of Clacton the weather remained relatively good enough for the Claton Airshow 2010 to go ahead. The weather was by now means the best, but at least good enough for the gathered crowds to enjoy the flying displays.

Here is a short video on Youtube, a small part of the Red Arrows display showing off their aerobatic skills.

The camera used in this instance is to take the clips is a point and shoot digital camera, a Canon Powershot A560 with a 4x Optical zoom.

Clacton Airshow

By Zo Nicholas

Clacton Airshow

Today is the day of the actual Clacton Airshow, a 2 day annual event that takes place along the beach and greensward in Clacton, with a full air display taking place over the sea during the afternoon . An event that in 2009 drew over 100,000 visitors. This year is the 19th year of the show. Each year there is a full flying program of wing walkers, Battle of Britain planes and others and the biggest draw, a display by the aerobatics team of the Royal Aiforce the Red Arrows.

Clacton Airshow 2010

Red Arrows 2008
The weather here in August has not been very kind to all the holiday makers and today is no exception. With heavy clouds, wind and the constant threat of rain does not bode well for the air display this afternoon. We are all keeping our fingers tighly crossed and hoping for just a little break in the clouds with perhaps a little sun to brighten up the day.

Photo Media Stock Seminar Information

This week-ends Photo Media Seminar has a busy schedule like all Ycademy Seminars and to anticipate some of the issues I would like to invite participants to prepare the following:

Adobe Lightroom 3

We will introduce and work with Adobe Lightroom 3. There are some amazing features and improvements of the software which will make our work easier. Amongst the improvements you will  find:

  1. Superior Noise Reduction
  2. Support for DSLR video file formats
  3. Improved Image Watermarking
  4. New Image Importing Interface
  5. Perspective Correction
  6. Tethered shooting
  7. Lens Correction
  8. Improved Slide-shows with Music

and more.

Please download and install the 30 days trial version from Adobe: Click HERE.

DO NOT install unless you have attended last night’s session.

We will install and custom configure the software at tonight’s Ycademy call.

Camera Calibration

As far as I am aware of, all participants use cameras which out-put jpg format images, compared to RAW formats. We will therefore do an empirical calibration based on what we see. For this reason, we work with a few images shot with our camera as follows:

  • 3 images daylight, normal conditions
  • 3 images low light conditions
  • 3 images flash (indoors, party, rooms,…)

Please load the pictures to a blog post or a page as wide as your column allows (for most 460 pixels).

Example before and after:

iPhone 4 Photos as shot:

Everybody knows the Vodafone red …. for my taste the above is too warm, too orange tinted.

Same here, the white is yellowish and the blue drifting off to a hazy warm blue.

Again very warm and yellow …

iPhone 4 Photos after Calibration

I have used the above iPhone 4 Photos to create a calibration preset in Lightroom 3. Then I re-loaded the images again and applied the preset to obtain the following results:

Purified mid tones and cooler tonal range, a bit of sharpening and the photo looks pretty much as I remember the scene.

The cooling provokes ‘blueish’ shadows … still better than yellow. The white on top of the image is closer to the real white.

Cooling helps a lot here; the countryside in the background has its real color. The walls of the buildings on the foreground are yellow in reality and dominate the color range. We are here pretty close to reality.

I have taken a similar photo with my P&S Leica V-Lux-20:

You may notice that this Photo before editing is better than the edited version of the iPhone Photo … or a more zoomed version:

As unreal as it may appear, these blues really stick out. However calibrating this camera, I would rather reduce the blue impact and create a preset which is less cool.

Note the church on the last image is also visible on the third iPhone Picture. The two pics have been taken from about the same location and distance. The optical zoom of the Leica provides a smashing result considering that we are talking about a camera about of the size of a box of cigarettes.

You like this picture? Pretty sharp huh … that one has been taken with a credit card size Leica C-Lux-3 Point and Shoot camera. Nice details … you see all the dust and finger prints on the cam and the iPhone.

Silvermine Nature Reserve

Silvermine Nature Reserve

Silvermine Nature Reserve – along Ou Kaapse Weg when coming from Cape Town, South Africa, and driving over the stunning Cape Peninsular mountain ranges towards Noordhoek – has just exploded with gold!

It’s spring!

Silvermine Nature Reserve by Bianca Gubalke Photography

Silvermine Nature Reserve

Sweeping vistas from Silvermine Nature Reserve with a gentle mist dissolving in the early morning sunlight.

Although I experimented with filters in a couple of monochrome versions, I love the above untouched original digital picture from my simple Nikon Coolpix P90 as it’s so authentic and documenting a very special day.

Imagine with this a very soft breeze rustling through the leaves of the typical fynbos… the already withering ericas overgrown by strikingly energetic leucadendrons… and the occasional twitter of those beautiful little long-tailed sunbirds circling up into the crystalline air….

Magic!

Destinations Expo 2010 Cape Town Interview

Destinations Expo 2010 Cape Town Interview

As the Destinations Expo 2010 in Cape Town has closed its doors on Sunday, 22nd August 2010, and as a response to various requests and comments from interested players in the Tourism Industry all across South Africa, we did an Interview with Dumi Sakuinje who attended this relatively new Travel & Holiday Expo in his capacity as the General Manager of Monkey Valley Resort, Noordhoek, South Africa – and who kindly and spontaneously agreed to give us some valuable feedback.

Dumi Sakuinje Interview by Bianca Gubalke, Noordhoek, South Africa

Destinations Expo 2010 Cape Town Interview with Dumi Sakuinje

In our brief yet informative Interview on the value, the results and merits of the “Destinations Expo 2010 Cape Town” , Dumi Sakuinje – who has a wealth of knowledge and experience in African Tourism all across the African continent -, comes to some conclusions that are of interest to anyone who wants to expand their South African Travel and Tourism Business, especially in view of the third Destinations Expo 2011 planned for next year.

Dumi Sakuinje on the Internet

Dumi Sakuinje is very positive and enthusiastic about the massive potential for Travel & Tourism in South Africa – and Africa a s a whole – however, given the fact that most bookings are being made online today, this can only happen with a strong presence and a good reputation on the Internet… meaning high visibility on search engines, like Google, as well as Social Networks, genre Facebook. Accordingly, this is where a major marketing effort and the relating investment has to be concentrated until the goal is reached. It’s the exact route Monkey Valley Resort follows – of course, on Semiomantics Evolution.

See a sneak-preview CLICK HERE.

Faster Internet lines would help; this 5 minutes 33 seconds Interview took over 6 hours to load – but it’s worth watching – enjoy!

Full Moon over Frinton

By Zo Nicholas

Full Moon

After a day of very strong winds, heavy clouds, sunshine and showers as the night came we managed to get a peek of a full moon amongst the heavy clouds.

Taking a picture of the moon with a  digital camera is not such an easy task. It needs just a little preparation beforehand to get a reasonable shot.

Shooting at the Moon

In this instance the camera used is a Nikon Coolpix P90, a 12megapixel camera with a 24x Optical zoom. In order to use the zoom successfully I took note of Yorgo’s advice in his article and set up a tripod as well as using a timer.

Catching the moon without cloud cover was a game of patience, as well as dedication for it was pretty cold outside. Here is the result below.

Full Moon

Full Moon

A shot to show the heavy cloud cover.

Full Moon with clouds

Unfortunately the cloud cover was too dense  and the temperature outside too cold to sit around for too long outside in order to do shots with the other cameras. Something worth doing perhaps another night.

How to reach Google Top 10 with your iPhone

I have tried for a while: blogging from the iPhone using just the normal WordPress application and then expecting results. here is the problem: when you use the iPhone appi to post to WordPress, your editing tools are limited. If you are used to Semiomantics standards when editing, the WP Application is definitely  insufficient… or was I wrong?

Semiomantics Converter Site

The new Semiomantics XO Media script can act as a converter.

Here is my test set-up:

in stead of posting directly to my main site, I post to a new Semiomantics XO Media site, which is configured to convert the post into a Semiomantics standard format. That converted post is then fed into the main blog.

Result: It works brilliantly!

Integrated Semiomantics Converter

Of course the next challenge was then to build the converter directly into the destination site. Test site is my Yorgo Nestoridis site.

Result: absolutely smashing.

The first test post was this after-noon’s McDonald’s joins Garden Route Directory. Target key-words: “McDonald’s (or McDonalds) Garden Route” and we hit the top of Google right away!

Half an hour later, when the post has propagated half way through the YORGOO Publishing network, the result changed …

It changed, but not really that much and by tomorrow it will change again. Worth while noting: the original post has been published first at Yorgo Nestoridis (.com).

With this successful conversion Semiomantics reaches a new milestone in ‘mobile publishing’.

Shooting at Rainbows in Essex

By Zo Nicholas

Shooting at Rainbows in Essex

Someone forgot to tell the weather man that it is still August and that the days should be nice and warm with lots of sunshine every day, warm evenings and only occassional rain at nice. So far this August we have had strong to gale force winds, thunderstorms, lots of heavy cloud most days, rain and even rainbows.

Driving home in Essex we managed to capture this picture of  a rainbow last night. The camera used was a Canon Powershot A560 with a  4x Optical zoom. Its a very easy to use point and shoot camera takes good, clear pictures even at speed in a moving car. Not one of the latest Canon point and shoot digital cameras, nevertheless the quality of the images is very good even in varying conditions.

Rainbow in Essex

Shooting at the Moon

Tonights Ycademy training call set exercise is to shoot at the moon. Hopefully here in Essex the clouds will part long enough to take a shot at the big sphere in the sky. If all goes well we will use the Canon Powershot  A560, the Nikon Coolpix P90 and the old Fuji Finepix to compare images.
